News / Flashing light proves to be false alarm

EMERGENCY services were alerted on Tuesday evening after a concerned member of the public thought there may have been a person in the sea north of St Ninian’s Isle flashing a light in distress.

Coastguard teams from Lerwick and Sumburgh were alerted after receiving the report just before 11pm, but the apparent light turned out to be the Bigton yoal rowing team.

The Lerwick Lifeboat and Sumburgh’s coastguard helicopter were tasked, but they were quickly stood down.
