News / Traffic calming work starts
WORK on implementing new traffic calming measures in Lerwick’s town centre got underway on Wednesday afternoon at the bottom of Church Road.
A number of measures will be introduced over the next three months as part of a £234,000 project designed to reduce the number of accidents in the area and make the centre more pedestrian friendly.
The Esplanade will move to a 20mph speed limit and speed cushions and raised pedestrian crossings will be installed.
Shetland Islands Council’s environment and transport committee voted the measures through last month in an effort to reduce the accident rate and make the area more pedestrian-friendly.
Some islanders have voiced opposition to the plans, suggesting the project isn’t the best use of public money.
Nearly £170,000 of the cost is being funded by national body Sustrans, with the SIC contributing £41,000 and the Scottish Government coughing up £25,000.
