News / Call for new disability access panel
EFFORTS are being made to create a new panel in Shetland to promote the rights of disabled people in the isles.
Katrina Christie is hoping to receive support from Scottish Disability Equality Forum, which oversees over 40 access panels across the country, to revive Shetland’s panel after a number of years without one.
The panels aim to help people with disabilities enjoy equal opportunities in the community and they bring together people who have an interest in the area.
They discuss topics such as access for disabled people, as well as transport and education, while the panels often provide training to local groups and businesses.
Christie will hold an informal meeting at Lerwick’s Market House on Wednesday at 7pm for people keen to get involved, with the session open to anyone.
“Living in Shetland brings its own unique access problems as well the usual ones experienced on the mainland,” she said.
“We need to ensure that people with disabilities aren’t being excluded and work to promote best practice across the community.”
