News / Over 200 air weapons surrendered to police

OVER TWO hundred unwanted guns have been handed into the police in Shetland as part of a nationwide air weapon amnesty ahead of a change in legislation.

From 1 January it will be an offence to use, possess, purchase or acquire an air weapon in Scotland without holding a special certificate.

Existing firearm or shotgun certificate holders will be able to use or possess air weapons until their firearm or shotgun certificate runs out.

Anyone who wishes to dispose of an air weapon before 31 December can hand it into the Lerwick Police Station.
