News / Disability sport group
SHETLAND is getting its own group dedicated to helping people with disabilities access sporting opportunities in the isles.
Shetland Sport for All will act as a branch of Scottish Disability Sport and it will provide a go-to “hub” for anything related to sport and disability in Shetland.
It will be open to anyone with a physical disability or a learning or sensory impairment either from birth or caused by injury or illness.
The group is expected to deliver events, organise training and raise the profile of disability sport, as well as provide helpful information and advice.
Shetland Sport for All’s first family event will take place at Lerwick’s Clickimin Leisure Complex on Sunday 4 December, with primary aged children with a disability invited to attend between 11.30am and 1pm.
Secondary school children and adults are encouraged to attend between 2pm and 3.30pm.
The sessions will revolve around an adapted pentathlon agility challenge, which will allow participants to take part at their own level.
Shetland Sport for All chairwoman Donna Murray said: ‘We are really looking forward to establishing the branch and delivering some exciting sporting opportunities in the near future.
“The branch committee, with support from Scottish Disability Sport and Shetland Islands Council’s sport and leisure service, aim to build on the good work of Disability Shetland and provide a pathway for more sport specific opportunities.”
Invitations for the family day are being sent out from Friday (18 November) and parents and carers are reminded that they will need to stay with their children or clients throughout the event.
