News / Isles-wide power cut
SHETLAND was plunged into darkness for a short period on Sunday evening when power supplies across the islands failed.
A spokesman for Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks said the electricity supply was automatically interrupted after a fault occurred on the main overhead line between Sullom Voe at the power station at Gremista.
The power went off shortly before 7pm and was restored in stages over the next 30 minutes:
- Just over 4,000 customers in the north mainland and the northern isles were restored within seconds;
- A further 1,000 customers in the west mainland were reconnected after around two minutes;
- Just under 3,500 customers south of Lerwick had their power back a short time before 7.15pm and
- Around 4,300 customers in Lerwick and surrounding areas were restored in stages from 7.15pm, with the final customers restored before 7.30pm.
“We would like to thank our customers for their patience and apologise for the inconvenience caused while our team completed supply restoration,” the spokesman said.
We are carrying out an investigation into the cause of this fault.”
