News / Tried to smuggle an iPhone into jail
A MAN from Scalloway who arrived at prison hiding an iPhone in his underwear has had sentence deferred for good behaviour.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said Adam Nelson, of Undirhoull, took the mobile to prison because he wanted to speak to his bereaved sister.
The 27 year old admitted at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday to attempting to bring or introduce into HM Prison Inverness a prohibited article on 10 February by concealing a mobile phone in his clothing.
Despite numerous signs detailing items that weren’t allowed inside, the 27 year old was seen attempting to conceal a phone in his tracksuit bottoms.
When the trousers were pulled down, the mobile was found inside his boxer shorts.
Allan said Nelson was “clearly concerned” about his sister’s wellbeing when he was brought into custody and took an iPhone with him in an attempt to keep in touch with her.
The solicitor said Nelson lost some privileges in prison for 14 days as a result, but he was given special access to a phone as a result of his circumstances.
Sheriff Philip Mann said Nelson had made good progress on previously implemented community payback orders and hoped he was at the start of a “major change” in his life.
In an effort not to “upset” Nelson’s development, Sheriff Mann deferred sentence for good behaviour until 15 March.
