Biggest cruise ship yet
THE BIGGEST cruise ship to ever visit Shetland will call at Lerwick harbour this weekend.
The 122,210 gross tonne Celebrity Silhouette is due to arrive for a 12-hours stay early on Sunday morning.
It will be the second time this summer that the size record has been broken, with 115,055 gross tonne Azura visiting in late June.
The 315 metre long Celebrity Silhouette has a capacity for 2,886 passengers.
This summer is a record-breaking cruise ship season all round for Lerwick Port Authority (LPA) with nearly 54,000 passengers expected to visit Shetland.
Harbour master Calum Grains said the town’s facilities are “ideal” for large cruise ships.
“The visit by Celebrity Silhouette will be another highlight of a record-breaking season and in the long involvement of Lerwick and Shetland with the cruise industry,” he said.
“The port is set for a special hat-trick this summer, with the highest number of cruise vessel arrivals, passengers and tonnage of shipping yet, including the biggest ship. There are also excellent bookings for next year.”
