News / Rugby players assist food bank’s move to new premises
SHETLAND’s food bank last week moved into new premises in Lerwick’s St Magnus Street – and it has also begun working with national organisation the Trussell Trust.
Shetland Foodbank, which was previously based at the town’s Commercial Road, moved with the assistance of a large squad of volunteers from Shetland Rugby Club who shifted more than 150 crates of food into the 20A St Magnus Street base.
The crates, which were donated by Tesco customers during the recent Fareshare collection in the Lerwick supermarket, were brought to the food bank last Tuesday.
Islesburgh Drama Group’s workshop had been used as a temporary store for the crates, where they were sorted by another team of volunteers – this time Police Scotland’s youth volunteers.
Angela Nunn and David Grieve of Shetland Foodbank said they wanted to thank the police, rugby squad, Islesburgh Drama Group, Tesco and the customers who donated for their “very generous” support.
The food bank is now well stocked and ready to support all clients referred to it for support in times of crisis.
Nunn and Grieve said enquiries for food bank support from all over Shetland remained high, with 205 food parcels given out in the first six months of this year.
The food bank is now working with the Trussell Trust, a social franchise that offers support to more than 400 food banks throughout the UK.
