News / Donations sought for new chairs in hospital sanctuary
NHS SHETLAND is appealing for donations to help provide seating in its newly redecorated Gilbert Bain Hospital sanctuary.
The health board said the revamp had turned the sanctuary into a “twenty first century multi-faith space” for patients, visitors, NHS staff and volunteers.
It is aimed at providing a place for peace and reflection for anyone needing “time out” from clinical areas to reflect, pray, meditate or “just sit in peace and quiet behind a privacy screen, read or enjoy the sea view, a place of tranquillity whether you have faith or not”.
A sanctuary task group worked with NHS Orkney and Shetland spiritual care leader Dawn Allan alongside local contractors and craftsmen and women to create the interior. Multi-faith literature is displaying, and a children’s seating area with cushions and toys has been provided.
NHS Shetland said the only outstanding furniture required were a minimum of 12 NHS-approved chairs, costing approximately £140 each, and the spiritual care department would be “extremely grateful for any donations received from the local community who will also be able to benefit from appropriate, comfortable sanctuary seating”.
