News / Cruise ships double up in Lerwick Harbour

LERWICK was bustling with tourists from two large cruise ships on Sunday.

The 181-metre Pacific Princess arrived from Dover at around 7am and the 221-metre Costa Neoromantica came in from Amsterdam about an hour later. Both were visiting the islands for the first time.

The Pacific Princess has capacity for around 680 guests, while the Costa Neoromantica has a maximum capacity of some 1,800. Many of the passengers were brought ashore for guided walks around Lerwick before they departed at 5pm and 6pm respectively on Sunday evening.

Lerwick Port Authority is expecting a further 38 cruise ships to visit between now and early October – including another four in the next two days. Including repeat visits, there have been 48 to date.

The biggest ship to date, the 290-metre, 115,000-tonne Azura, carrying over 3,000 passengers, visited back in June. That record is due to be eclipsed on 14 August when the 315-metre Celebrity Silhouette comes to town.
