News / Yell algae
THE LATEST warning about toxic blue green algae in Shetland comes from the island of Yell.
On Friday Shetland Islands Council said they had received a notification from environmental watchdog SEPA that the algea had been found in the Lochans, at Ness of Sound, Westsandwick.
Notices have been posted in the local shop and next to the loch warning that contact with algal scum should be avoided.
Adjoining landowners and fishing interests have been advised of the situation, as has NHS Shetland.
At this stage, the council says, there is no adverse effect on water supplies.
