News / Major training exercise
A LARGE scale training exercise involving Shetland’s coastguard and lifeboat teams took place off Sumburgh on Sunday morning.
The search and rescue helicopter and a few local coastguard rescue crews were joined by the lifeboats from Aith and Lerwick as well as the airport’s fire crew and British Red Cross.
The Lerwick lifeboat threw 30 dummies overboard into the sea in an exercise designed to test the emergency services’ response to a ditched aircraft.
The exercise started at 10.15am and it was wrapped up by 12.15pm.
