News / Fat-Suit funk up Lerwick
THERE was a veritable smorgasbord of funk and groove on offer in Lerwick on Friday night as Scottish instrumental collective Fat-Suit hit Shetland’s capital.
The fusion group – featuring a total of nine members across instruments such as saxophone, fiddle and keyboard – headlined the Lerwick Legion in front of an adoring throng of revellers.
After some scene-setting DJ work by Brendan Hall, the night was opened by comedy-tinged local group Big Time Quell before trio The FB paid homage to the likes of Stevie Wonder with serious groove.
Funkicity, formed through the isles’ music college course, brought a chunky, window-rattling rock-meets-funk sound as the final warm-up to Fat-Suit.
The Glasgow-based multi-genre outfit brought the house down with a jamboree of styles that showcased serious chops and experimental pizzaz as well as a penchant for producing hip-grinding, toe-tapping tunes.
The night was organised by local DJ Lyall Halcrow, with the promoter previously packing out gigs with visiting acts like the popular Federation of the Disco Pimp.
The Legion lights went up at the end of the night but Fat-Suit rallied through for on the much-demanded ‘one more tune’, before revealing their desire to return Shetland in future – much to the glee of the dance floor devotees.
