News / £8,000 for the lifeboat

MORE than £8,000 was raised for the RNLI during the Lerwick Lifeboat’s open day, which was held at Victoria Pier on Saturday.

The open day was declared another “marvellous” success by the Lerwick Ladies Lifeboat Guild despite cold north-easterly winds which prevented organisers from erecting some of the smaller tents.

Treasurer Rhoda Watt said: “We still managed to have all the usual stalls – with the souvenirs, raffle and book stalls sharing space in the tea tent.

“And visitors were treated to live music from 11 in the morning until four in the afternoon.”

She said her team was particularly indebted to the coastguard and fire crews who braved the inclement conditions by standing out for the entire day.

Meanwhile, at Holmsgarth around 200 people boarded the NorthLink passenger ferry Hrossey for the trip around Bressay and to enjoy the lifeboat and helicopter exercise.

“We are very grateful to everyone who helped in any way to make this, once more, a very successful fund raiser for the RNLI,” Watt said. “We would also like to thank all who participated on the day and donated money.”
