News / Funding for the southend
THE PUBLIC is set to decide which community groups in the South Mainland will receive funding from a new £18,000 participatory budgeting scheme in the area.
Three community councils – Dunrossness, Sandwick, and Gulberwick, Quarff and Cunningsburgh – are taking part in the scheme after a similar project was recently confirmed for Lerwick.
They have combined their own funding and have seen it matched by the Scottish Government to create a total pot of £18,000 for the South Mainland Decides scheme.
Community groups and individuals in the South Mainland can apply to access the funding before a public vote is held for locals at the Sandwick Social Club on 18 June to determine which projects are successful.
Sandwick community councillor Denise Bell said the scheme is designed to “hand as much control” to local areas.
“Groups and individuals can apply for either one off projects or for help with maintenance or running costs, as long as the project is going to be of benefit to the people who live and work in the South Mainland,” she said.
Development officer Pat Christie added: “It’s an exciting opportunity for the area. There is double the money and we hope this will attract more and new groups to apply.”
Application forms can be completed online or on paper and are available from community council clerks or at www.southmainlanddecides.org
The closing date for applications is 28 May.
