News / BBC Ten Pieces returns

BBC Ten Pieces' event for primary pupils in March last year, featuring Shetland Community Orchestra, is to be reprised for secondary pupils next month.

FOLLOWING the success of last year’s BBC Ten Pieces event, the Shetland Community Orchestra is running another event aimed at secondary students.

Ten Pieces is a schools initiative led by the BBC Learning and BBC Performing Groups, aimed at opening up the world of classical music to a generation of children and inspiring them to develop their own creative responses to ten pieces of music.

Shetland Community Orchestra is running a day of workshops, with sponsorship from Shetland Arts, at Mareel on Sunday 13 March from 1pm. Representatives from the BBC Scottish Symphony will visit to lead the workshops and play alongside young islanders.

Secondary schools in Shetland have been using the BBC Ten Pieces as part of lessons with S1 and S2 classes since October.

Beginning with a screening of the BBC Ten Pieces film at Mareel, students have learnt about remixing and sampling using Bach’s Toccata and Fugue; leitmotif through Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries and composing on tablet computers using Prokofiev’s Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra.

Several of the ten pieces will be featured in the gala concert with samples of artwork, dance and compositions from the secondary students.

The event will be filmed for screening on the BBC Ten Pieces website. With contributions from the Shetland Community Orchestra, Shetland Community Training Orchestra and Shetland Community School of Ballet, the day will culminate with a gala concert in the Mareel auditorium. Tickets for the concert will be available from Shetland Box Office.
