HIGHLANDS and Islands Green Party MSP John Finnie has launched his election campaign by naming jobs and housing as priority areas for Shetland.
Finnie, who left the SNP in 2012 after the party voted for an independent Scotland to join NATO, says increasing the number of Greens at Holyrood would create a “bolder” Scottish Parliament.
Launching his campaign on Wednesday, Finnie pointed to the fact that Shetland has the fourth worst rate of fuel poverty in Scotland, as well as rapidly rising rent prices.
He also said the Green Party could help realise Scotland’s potential for renewable energy.
“Shetland has a desperate need for sustainable jobs and warm, affordable homes – but we also have the ability to solve those problems,” he said.
“Scotland has one quarter of the European Union’s entire offshore wind and marine energy potential, with a huge proportion of that coming from the seas around Shetland.
“Scotland can generate thousands of jobs while we generate clean energy, but we need to take decisive action to be first into the race.”
Finnie is vying for votes before Scotland heads to the polls on 5 May.
