News / Panel seeks members
LOCAL folk interested in young people’s welfare are being encouraged to join the Shetland Children’s Panel.
Children’s Hearings Scotland are inviting volunteers aged over 18 to join the panel, which makes vital decisions about the wellbeing of vulnerable youngsters.
Men in particular are being sought to help meet the legal requirement for both men and women to attend hearings.
Shetlander Luke Suddaby, who joined the Children’s Panel last year after appearing in front of it as a teenager, is encouraging people to apply.
“Sitting on a children’s hearing can be very challenging but also very rewarding,” the 26 year old said.
“There’s a lot to learn but you have loads of support throughout and being in Shetland means you get to know the other panel members which really helps.
“You develop your decision-making skills and ability to react to difficult situations on the spot which helps you grow in confidence within the role.
“It can be difficult and very emotive but it’s something really worthwhile to be a part of as you are helping make decisions to improve the lives of vulnerable children and young people.”
Anyone interested in applying can attend an information meeting on Monday 14 September at 7pm at the Children’s Panel offices on Lerwick’s Hill Lane.
People have until 30 September to apply to join the panel.
