News / Art workshops this summer

SHETLAND Arts has just announced a series of workshops to keep budding artists busy this summer.

Local author Malachy Tallack, now based in Glasgow, will share some of the tools and techniques to help turn experiences into words during a 90-minute non-fiction writing workshop at Mareel on 27 July, starting at 6pm.

Tallack’s book Sixty Degrees North: Around the World in Search of Home, published this month, has just been serialised for BBC Radio Four’s book of the week programme.

Meanwhile, Berenice Carrington will host three drawing workshops (ethnographic drawing, discovering a drawing in photographs and lino printing) as part of her new exhibition Unearthed, which runs at the Bonhoga Gallery until early September.

The workshops will be held in the Green Room at Mareel on 29 July, 18 August and 23 August. Tickets cost £6 per workshop or £15 for all three.

Finally, director and art development officer John Haswell will lead a five-day drama workshop for 7-11 year olds at the Garrison Theatre.

The project will focus on a range of drama skills, developing confidence, encouraging creativity and having lots of fun.

Haswell’s workshops will run daily between 10am and 12.30 during the week beginning 10 August, and will culminate in a performance in front of family and friends. The cost is £35 for the week.

Tickets for all these events can be booked at www.shetlandboxoffice.org, by contacting the Shetland Box Office at Mareel and Islesburgh, or by phoning 01595 745555.
