Charlie Gorman of Music in Hospitals inspires a bit of audience participation.

CARE homes and the hospital in Shetland are to be livened up this week with a series of concerts by a Scottish charity.

Musicians Derek Richardson, Davy McMartin and Charlie Gorman of Music in Hospitals will present “a huge repertoire” to residents throughout the isles.

Armed with their guitars, indoor pipes, harmonicas, concertina, banjo, whistles, mandolin, mouth organ and percussion, they will be encouraging everyone in the audience to take part in their shows at 10 establishments across Shetland.

The charity Music in Hospitals (MiH) brings live music by professional musicians to people in care throughout Scotland.

Thanks to support from oil company Total, the charity is embarking upon its first extended concert tour of Shetland from 12 to 17 April, during which time 10 live performances will be given at the care units involved.

MiH chief executive Alison Frazer said: “We are delighted to be visiting Shetland again, this time to provide an extended tour of care units across the islands.

“And we are excited also to be contributing to the vibrant music scene for which Shetland is renowned.

“This tour has been made possible by a generous donation from TEP UK, supporters of MiH for 35 years.

“Many local people in long-term care will be able to participate in a shared musical and social occasion and we hope the performances are enjoyed by residents, service users, care staff, families and friends.”

Total’s Sandra McLennan said the company was “thrilled” to help MiH come to the isles.

“As long-term supporters of the charity, we have seen on many occasions the power and positive impact that MiH musicians have had on audiences in the north east of Scotland,” she said.

“It’s good to know that the Shetland Islands will have the opportunity to experience this for themselves and embrace the personal warmth, musical talent and unique professional skills these musicians have to offer.”
