News / Scam warning
TRADING Standards are warning folk in Shetland to be on their guard, as people across the islands continue to report receiving phone calls from scammers.
“Lots of us have been called by someone claiming to be from Windows.
“And today (Wednesday) we received a report of someone claiming to be carrying out a demographic survey for ‘Shetland Council’,” David Marsh,
Trading Standards team leader with Shetland Islands Council said.
“Never give your bank details or other personal details to a cold caller, and don’t be afraid to put the phone down.
“Shetland Islands Council is not currently undertaking any such survey, and would never be asking for people’s personal details in this manner,” Marsh advised.
Scams can be reported to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk or by phoning 0300 123 2040.
They can also be reported by contacting the local trading standards office in Lerwick by calling 01595 744887, or in person at the Council’s office on the ground floor of Charlotte House.
Trading Standards also have packs containing information and advice to help people deal with cold callers, whether on the phone, at the door, or by post or email. These can be picked up from Charlotte House, or posted out on request.
