News / Gas plant worker dies

CONSTRUCTION firm Petrofac has confirmed that a 61 year old worker on the new Shetland Gas Plant has died after being taken ill.

The company said the man was transferred to Lerwick’s Gilbert Bain Hospital on Wednesday morning after becoming unwell on site and was then flown to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary later that day where he died.

It is understood the man’s death was due to natural causes rather than anything work-related.

A Petrofac spokesman said: “We can confirm that a Shetland Gas Plant worker has sadly passed away.

“Our thoughts are with his family who we will continue to support in any way we can.”

The gas plant construction site was working normally on Thursday, though previously the site has closed the day after a worker has died.

However it is understood that the workers on the same shift as the dead man stopped work one hour early the following day.
