News / Hjaltland gets lottery cash

HJALTLAND Housing Association (HHA) has been awarded a substantial lottery grant worth £376,000 to help fund a project to support young people coming out of care.

The lottery money will help the housing association to continue with its Hub Project, run and funded in conjunction with Shetland Islands Council’s children’s services and housing departments.

HHA works with those leaving care from the age of 15 and supports their efforts to make a transition to living independently.

The funding will aid staff at a complex with two supported accommodation units and a shared space where non-resident young people attend drop-ins.

HHA housing manager Fiona Robertson said: “We are delighted that the big lottery has agreed to continue to fund the Hub Project for a further three years.

“It provides a range of support to young people including supported accommodation to build their skills to manage a tenancy of their own in the future as well as supporting them to access and maintain employment and build positive links with those in the community.”

Northern Isles MP Alistair Carmichael welcomed the news: “HHA does a great job in providing accommodation and tailored support for vulnerable young people coming out of the care system,” he said.

“It is vital that we provide safe, stable accommodation for these young people during what can be a stressful time in their lives.

“Any extra support for the carers who help with this process is to be welcomed, and so I am delighted that HHA will receive this significant funding.”
