Oil cash for charities

THE STRONG safety record at the Shetland gas plant construction site has left four local charities better off to the tune of £10,000.

On Wednesday the gas plant owner Total and chief building contractor Petrofac handed out cheques for £2,500 to local representatives of Cancer Research UK, Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), The Lighthouse Project and The Shetland Isles Riding Centre each received £2,500.

The donations are a result of an on-site safety campaign that saw the number of health and safety incidents drop by 63.8 per cent during last year, with no lifting-related incidents or high-potential incidents.

Petrofac’s glas plant health and safety manager David East said: “Safety is at the core of our business, but it is essential that we never become complacent.

“This challenge was extremely well received at site and I am delighted that it was accomplished thanks to a team effort, resulting in much–needed support for each of these worthwhile charities.”

Meanwhile six Shetland primary schools have been given free science and engineering project kits by the Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland, an initiative supported by Total.

The lucky north mainland schools are Lunnasting, Brae, Mossbank, North Roe, Ollaberry and Urafirth.
