News / SNP branch up 450%
THE SNP’S membership in Shetland has increased by more than 450 per cent since the day after last month’s independence referendum, the local party says.
Shetland branch convener Charlie Gallagher said the party now had a “revitalised” presence in the islands, which would assure leader-in-waiting Nicola Sturgeon of “another fantastic reception” when she next visits.
Gallagher said he was “delighted” Sturgeon, who spoke before a packed Shetland Museum auditorium during the campaign in late August, had been elected unopposed to replace Alex Salmond as SNP leader.
“I would on behalf of the SNP Shetland branch extend a warm invitation to her to return to Shetland as part of her tour of Scotland,” he said.
“I’m also sure that Nicola is just the right person to hold Cameron, Clegg and Miliband to their vow which was then fully defined by Gordon Brown as ‘home rule’ up to and including federalism.
“Though after Tuesday’s display in Westminster where the red Tories walked out on the blue Tories over England votes for English laws, I have grave doubts if they can deliver a pint of milk.
“But make no mistake she will relentlessly pursue Alistair Carmichael and his ‘No’ colleagues to deliver or suffer the consequences, for believe you me there will be consequences, and on their collective heads be it.”
