News / Knab cross country
OVER 40 runners enjoyed near ideal conditions as they took part in a cross country event at the Knab on Sunday.
The event, organised by Shetland Amateur Athletics Club (SAAC), was staged on a day of light winds and sunny intervals, with mostly firm ground underfoot.
Runners of all ages took part, from juniors aged 9 and under through to senior men and women. For the first time, around a dozen SAAC track and field athletes, including sprinters, jumpers and throwers, took part – using the event as an opportunity for some winter fitness training.
The course layout involved a combination of laps for different age categories, based on one smaller lap of 1km and a larger lap of 2.7km.
Fastest among the senior men was triathlete Pete Fenwick, who ran 9,100 metres in 43 minutes, 12 seconds, while the fastest woman was Charlotte Black. She completed the 6.4km course in 32 minutes, 7 seconds.
It was the second of six open cross country events planned this winter, with one more before the end of the year and three more early in 2015.
Event organiser and club endurance coach Mike Burns said it had been “another great day’s cross country”.
“Well done to all the runners, especially some fantastic performances from the juniors,” he said. “Thanks also to all the helpers and volunteers for marshalling, timekeeping and setting up the course.”
- The next event us due to take place on Sunday 16 November, and more details can be found on Shetland Road Running’s Facebook page or on the SAAC website.
