News / US game show
THE ISLANDS will once again be drawn to the attention of a global televised audience as Shetland feature in American network CBS’s game show ‘The Amazing Race’ this weekend.
The Shetland-set episode will feature nine teams of young contenders taking part in challenges including herding sheep, cutting peats, pony trekking and making Up Helly Aa torches.
Davie Gardner, who helped out with the logistical arrangements for filming while the contestants were in the islands, said it had a potential worldwide audience of well over 100 million – including around 12 million in the US.
He said locations were carefully chosen to highlight some of Shetland’s most eye-catching scenery and culture.
Working as the producers’ local fixer, Gardner said, had been “a huge challenge” and involved hiring around 50 locals to work in various roles.
While the programme is not shown in this country, he said the producers had promised to send a DVD across the pond so islanders who were involved get the chance to see the finished show.
- ‘The Amazing Race’ will be broadcast at 8-9pm (ET/PT) in the US. You can read more information and view a selection of images on the CBS website at www.cbs.com/shows/amazing_race/photos/1002537/teams-get-their-sheeps-together-in-scotland
