News / Lighthouse Big Draw
ARTISTS will have the opportunity to take part in a national “Big Draw” event at Sumburgh Lighthouse later this month.
The lighthouse’s visitor centre will be open between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 18 October for folk of all ages – from enthusiastic beginners to skilled sketchers – to come along and get involved in the collaborative drawing project.
The 2014 Big Draw runs from 1 October to 2 November across the UK and in 20 other countries, with 280,000 people expected to join in over 1,000 events.
This year’s theme is “it’s our world”, a celebration of the environment, including urban, rural and coastal landscapes, and the organisers say that makes Sumburgh Head “a perfect setting” for a drawing event.
Participants will be able to draw inside and outside the visitor centre, including the engine room which powers the fog horn, the radar hut and the stunning coastal landscape surrounding the lighthouse, including panoramic views from the windows out to Fair Isle, Foula and even Noss.
In the education room, textile artist Jen Deschenes will lead the construction of a giant collaborative drawing, which everyone will be asked to contribute to.
Born in Shetland and raised in Whalsay, Deschenes draws on Shetland traditions in her own work. Her current exhibition ‘Common Thread’ is showing at the Bonhoga Gallery until 26 October.
- Admission to the Big Draw event will be £4 for adults and £2 for children, with free entry for under 5s. You can find out more at http://www.thebigdraw.org/event/Lighthouse_drawing_day/4344
