News / Good Shepherd drifting off Sumburgh Head
LERWICK Lifeboat has been launched to take the Fair Isle ferry Good Shepherd under tow after she suffered engine failure a mile and a half south of Sumburgh Head.
The ferry with 15 people on board was on route to the Grutness Pier when losing all power just before 10am.
A council spokesman said the ferry was in no immediate danger as there were several other vessels in the vicinity that could come to her assistance.
The Lerwick lifeboat is expected to arrive at the scene at just before 11am.
The council’s ferries manager Ken Duerden said it looks as though a drive shaft in the fuel pump had gone, and added that this was only an initial assessment.
