News / 60-mile trek around Unst for three charities

SEVEN Unst lasses began a 60-mile trek around the island’s coastline on Thursday morning as they seek to raise funds for three separate charities.

Siobhan Pirie, Alana Johnson, Fern Johnson, Jennifer Hamilton, Andrea Laurenson, Lindsey Jamieson and Jodi Clark (pictured alongside three supporters) have embarked on the hike in support of Mind Your Head, MS Society and Action for ME.

Their trek is longer than the distance of two marathons – with the hills and cliffs they will encounter en route making for harder conditions underfoot.

Pirie said: “We are planning to walk 60 miles over the wilds of Unst within four days. This trek will test both our mental and physical endurance (not to mention our friendship!) but we think it will be worth t to raise money for such brilliant causes.

“We have decided to fundraise for three different charities that we all think are really worthwhile and maybe don’t get the recognition they deserve.”

The seven girls have already exceeded their target of raising £1,500, with 95 donations totalling £1,775 as of Thursday morning amounting to over £2,100 once gift aid is factored in.

“We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations however big or small,” Pirie said. “We would also be delighted if anyone would like to join us for any part of the walk over the four days.”
