News / Intercounty victory
SHETLAND has beaten Orkney in the intercounty football match in Kirkwall after extra time on Saturday to bring home the Milne Cup.
Shane Jamieson scored Shetland’s winning goal in the closing minutes of extra time after Orkney scored a late equaliser shortly before the 90 minutes were up.
Shetland went one nil up in the 28th minute from a Robert Smith goal, only for Orkney’s Chris Helewell to equalise shortly before the game was due to end.
Into extra time Orkney went ahead with a goal from James Linklater before Connor Regan made it 2-2 and then Jamieson made sure it did not go to a penalty shoot out.
Meanwhile the women’s hockey final went the other way, with Orkney beating Shetland a decisive 4-1, Shetland’s only goal coming from Julie Kirkness.
In the mixed hockey Shetland fared better beating Orkney 1-0 thanks to a goal from Charlie Unsworth.
