TWO young Shetland film makers have had their films shortlisted in the world renowned Edinburgh International Film Festival.

The islands’ youth film group Maddrim Media submitted two short films made by two of its youngest members, Annie Smith from Bressay and Jenny Brown from Lerwick, both aged 15.

Now their films have been selected for the film festival’s Short Film Challenge to be screened at Filmhouse Edinburgh on Saturday 16 August.

A jury will be at the event to pick the winners for best film, most original idea and most innovative use of the short film challenge theme, which required a creative incorporation of the number 14.

Annie Smith wrote and directed 14 is the Colour of Hate, which despite its title is described as “a humourous short film exploring the dreams of the characters involved”.

It’s 2014 is a short documentary on poverty by Jenny Brown that “sends a message of relevance to be heeded, sadly, still today”.

Maddrim Media chairwoman Cara McDiarmid said the group, which she set up several years ago while still at school, were “just so proud” the two films were shortlisted.

“They have only been Maddrim members for a year so this is an incredible achievement,” she said.

“To show films on the big screen is so exciting, and to be invited down to the Filmhouse in Edinburgh is such an honour.”

McDiarmid said Maddrim Media has had a very successful year so far, gaining funding for new equipment and training and organising an exchange with Edinburgh-based youth film group SKAMM (Scottish Kids Are Making Movies).

The two Maddrim films will be shown at the Shetland film festival Screenplay, which runs from 29 August to 7 September.

Maddrim are looking for new members and can be contacted at maddrimmedia@gmail.com
