Cannabis grower
A LERWICK cannabis grower was placed under supervision and ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work after admitting he grew the class B drug at his home for more than a year.
Dell Smith admitted stealing electricity worth almost £4,000 over a five and a half year period as well.
The 38 year old was also tagged for three months and is not allowed to leave his home between the hours of 7pm and 7am.
The court had heard that police had found 558 grams of cannabis when they raid Smith’s house at 22 Burnside, Lerwick.
Defence solicitor Tommy Allan said his client had started using cannabis as one way of dealing with the grief of losing his mother.
He said Smith acknowledged that “things got out of control”, and that his reliance on cannabis had prevented him from moving on and dealing with his grief.
The court also heard that Smith had started paying back the electricity utility.
Broken nose
A YOUNG Lerwick man had sentence deferred for good behavior following a serious assault that left his victim with a broken nose.
Shaun Smith, of 11 Hill Grind, had previously pled guilty to assaulting another man at the town’s St Olaf’s Street on 28 December.
Sheriff Philip Mann said he was considering a custodial sentence, but was prepared to give the 20 year old a chance by deferring sentence until 19 March next year for him to be of good behavior.
Drink driving
A DRIVER was banned for 16 months and fined £600 after admitting he was more than twice the legal limit for alcohol when he put his car off the road between Tingwall and Scalloway on 1 June.
Twenty five year old Ciaran Lack, of Blydoit Park, Scalloway, was told that he could reduce the length of the disqualification by four months if he successfully completes a drink driver’s rehabilitation course.
