A YOUNG Shetland flying enthusiast has secured a £1,000 bursary from the Fresson Trust in support of her training for the commercial pilot’s licence.

Freya Inkster, from Bridge End in Burra, is taking flying lessons at the Langley Flying School in British Columbia, Canada.

The 19 year old said she was extremely grateful to the trust for helping towards the cost of her studies.

“I am using the bursary to get my night rating, which I am really enjoying. Flying at night is a challenge, particularly navigating and landing.

“After completing my night rating I still have a long way to go but the next step will be to concentrate on building up flying hours as well as studying hard for my exams.

“I would like to thank the Fresson Trust for helping me towards my dreams.”

The trust was set up in 1991 in memory of the pioneering aviator Captain Ernest Edmund Fresson OBE, one of the first to open up aviation in Shetland.

In 1933 he landed his Monospar aircraft in Bressay and three years later he established a scheduled passenger service in and out of Sumburgh.

In addition to supporting young people in Moray and the Highlands and Islands who are pursuing a career in aviation, the Fresson Trust commemorates significant milestones in the aviation history of the region.
