News / Poster campaign winner
A SEVEN year old pupil at Scalloway Primary School has won a poster campaign aimed at encouraging drivers to reduce their speed as they drive into and through the village.
Primary three pupil Maya MacKay came up with a poster asking drivers to “Reduce your speed now!”, and she won a cycle helmet and a voucher worth £15 for cycling equipment or repairs.
Her colourful artwork will now be displayed around Scalloway as a reminder to motorists. The two runners up were primary one pupil Haakon van der Tol and primary two pupil Kirsty Nicolson.
The competition was judged by council road safety staff. Chairman of the road safety advisory panel Steven Coutts said he was “really impressed with the creativity of the pupils” and “would have been pleased to have chosen any one of the entries for the campaign, but Maya’s work was particularly impressive”.
Coutts added: “I hope that drivers passing through Scalloway will pay attention to the message – it’s a bustling community with many bairns on the roads and pavements, and their safety has to be our highest priority.”
