News / Driving in fog

POLICE are warning Shetland drivers to ensure their vehicle lights are fully working and being used correctly during foggy weather.

Defective lights can result in on the spot fines of £50 fines and in certain circumstances vehicles can be banned from the road until the lights are returned to working order.

A £50 fine can also be issued if drivers use side lights and fail to use dipped headlights during periods of fog and reduced visibility.

A Shetland police spokesman said: “Permanent use of dipped headlights even in times of good visibility highlights your position on the road making you more noticeable to oncoming vehicles and very often reduces inappropriate overtaking manoeuvres by oncoming vehicles.”

He added: “Cyclists should increase the amounts of lights used in times of reduced visibility and also consider using lights through periods of good visibility to raise your profile on the road.”
