Textiles exhibition
Five textile students from Shetland College UHI are to be exhibiting their work at the Shetland Textile Museum at the Bod of Gremista, in Lerwick.
Anne Eunson, Connie Flynn, Alvis Gill-Merrall, Robyn Inkster and Rebecca Richardson are showcasing their personal projects from their of BA (Hons) contemporary textiles course, covering a wide range of disciplines including knit, weave, stitch and felting.
The five students come from very different background and have studied a wide range of textile technique, historical and contemporary.
Eunson said: “I studied the history of colour in Fair Isle knitting, from the earliest examples in the Shetland Textile Museum right through to the present day, noting the impact of commercial dyes and mill-spun yarn.”
Gill-Merrall meanwhile added a modern take on the traditional Ikat weave, one of the oldest methods of producing fabric.
Ikat is thought to have developed in Eastern Indonesia before spreading to East Asia, India and other countries.
She said: “I took inspiration from this highly-skilled specialised technique and adapted my work using dyes and paints.
“I fell in love with Ikat, and I am happy to have found a process which I can continue experimenting with beyond the BA programme, to produce eye catching fabric for interior design.”
The exhibition will be marked with a special opening on Saturday 17 May between midday and 5pm. It will run until 14 June.
