News / Speeding clampdown

Shetland's chief inspector Eddie Graham.

POLICE in Shetland are to target motorists speeding near schools this week as part of a Highlands and Islands-wide safety campaign.

Drivers are being warned that they must abide by a 20mph speed limit near schools in the islands. Otherwise they risk receiving a fixed penalty fine or being reported to the procurator fiscal.

It comes after seven people were banned for various offences including drink driving at Lerwick Sheriff Court last week. The duration of the bans ranged from one year up to 10 years.

Shetland’s chief inspector Eddie Graham said police were “committed to making the roads safer for everyone” and reiterated a warning to people not to get behind the wheel when over the alcohol limit.

“This type of criminal behaviour has consequences with those convicted facing bans, social stigma as well as putting the livelihoods and the safety of others at risk,” Graham said.

Meanwhile he is also warning drivers in Lerwick town centre that police will crack down on illegal parking in Harrison Square because it is harming traders in the area.

“We have a number of local businesses that are experiencing difficulties loading and unloading produce – basically I am renewing my appeal to drivers to be considerate. There is sufficient parking space elsewhere in Lerwick.”
