News / Popular Geordie comic to kick off tour at Mareel
ONE OF Britain’s best-loved comedians, Ross Noble, has chosen Shetland as the starting point for his UK tour in September.
The 37 year old Geordie will perform in Mareel’s 330-seater auditorium on Thursday 11 September as the starting point of his ‘Tangentleman’ tour.
Noble was voted the tenth greatest comic on Channel Four’s 100 greatest stand-ups in 2007, then came 11th on an updated list in 2011. He rose to mainstream popularity through appearances on UK television, including appearances on celebrity quiz shows, bringing him widespread attention.
“I love playing in Scotland but unlike a lot of performers I don’t think Edinburgh is as far up as you can go,” Noble said. “I want to take the show from the top of the country to the bottom and I’m really looking forward to seeing what Shetland has got in store for me.”
Described as a “randomist”, his stand-up routine is a largely improvised and often surreal performance. Although he often has a few set topics which he returns to throughout his tours, Noble describes planning for the entire show as “about four words on a piece of scrap paper”.
The gig is being presented by Shetland Arts, and its marketing officer Lisa Ward said the organisation was expecting “huge demand” for tickets when they go on sale this Friday morning.
“As ‘Tanglentleman’ is a UK-wide tour, it seems only fitting that the tour should start in the UK’s most northerly live venue,” Ward said.
“Shetland has a proud heritage of hosting some of the UK’s biggest names in comedy and music, helping to build Mareel’s reputation as one of the UK’s ‘must-play’ venues.”
• Tickets to see Ross Noble live in Shetland cost £15 and go on sale this Friday at 10am.
