News / New ambulances
TWO remote island communities in Shetland are set to take delivery of specially adapted 4×4 ambulances.
Skerries and Fetlar will each receive one of the vehicles, part of a programme by the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) to provide ten such ambulances to remote communities in Orkney and Shetland.
The vehicles, to will be available to local nurses and doctors to transfer patients as well as providing a sheltered examination and treatment environment, and will be delivered in the coming weeks.
Divisional head of services for Orkney, Shetland and western isles, Andy Fuller said the initiative would bring the number of ambulances deployed in the northern isles to 18.
“The investment in additional new island vehicles is part of a programme to deliver modern, fit for purpose services and create practical solutions tailored to the local needs of communities,” he added.
A third vehicle will be kept in Lerwick as a spare back up.
