Letters / The next best thing
O dear what is this rubbish Mr Hill is speaking now (Foreign aid; SN 19/2/14).
He speaks about Shetland as our island, but if I remember correctly it’s not that many years ago that he had to be rescued off these same islands in a dinghy that many a sailor would think twice about going around Bressay in.
Having said that I have no problem with him or anyone else coming here to live.
As for the Sovereign Nation of Shetland, that, I’m afraid, is a figment of his imagination.
Again, as I said in my last letter (Broken promises; SN 17/2/14), these islands used to be part of Scandinavia, but the Scots refused to give them back and take the money, which was the original agreement.
If Mr Hill is in any doubt of this then perhaps a quick walk around town looking at street names might give the game away – King Harald Street, St Olaf Street, St Sunniva Street, King Erik Street to name but some.
I can’t see us ever becoming part of Scandinavia again, so for me the next best thing is to keep the status quo.
And Yes Mr Hill, I will be voting NO. I don’t need to ask the question “Why”.
