Letters / Inconvenient truth

The Sovereign Nation of Shetland has entered the Scottish Independence debate.

The Sovereign Nation represents those Shetlanders who stand up for Shetland’s innate rights. They are particularly concerned that those rights are being trampled in the debate about Scottish independence, where the political parties are seen to be squabbling over Shetland’s resources and neither side has any rights here.

We have formally claimed title of Shetland’s land and seabed on behalf of the people of Shetland. We have asked the Scottish and UK governments if they have a superior claim, but they have failed to produce one. In view of the fact that the courts are unable to show any proof that Shetland is part of Scotland, this does not surprise us.

As far as Shetland is concerned, any discussion about Scottish independence, while interesting, is irrelevant to Shetland. We should not be meddling in their affairs.

Neither should they make rash assumptions about the ownership of our resources. For too long has Shetland bowed to the baseless claims of Scotland and the UK.

Austerity measures imposed from outside are now beginning to damage us and it is time to stand up and say enough is enough.

A programme of events is planned to expose Shetland’s ‘inconvenient truth’. Details at www.sovereignshetland.com
