News / Taylor scoops media award

SHETLAND was well represented at this year’s Highlands and Islands Media Awards, which were announced during a ceremony at the Drumrossie Hotel, in Inverness, on Friday night.

Not only was Ryan Taylor from the Shetland Times named reporter of the year, but the Shetland News website and the Shetland Times had been shortlisted for the best use of digital media award and the newspaper of the year award respectively.

But it was the Stornoway Gazette that went away with both accolades.

Taylor said he was surprised and honoured to have been named reporter of the year.

“I think the standard of journalism across the Highlands and Islands is very high, and it’s an honour to have been recognised in this way,” he said.

Other winners were:

Shetland News is asking its many readers to consider start paying for their dose of the latest local news delivered straight to their PC, tablet or mobile phone.

Journalism comes at a price and because that price is not being paid in today’s rapidly changing media world, most publishers - national and local - struggle financially despite very healthy audience figures.

Most online publishers have started charging for access to their websites, others have chosen a different route. Shetland News currently has  over 600 supporters  who are all making small voluntary financial contributions. All funds go towards covering our cost and improving the service further.

Your contribution will ensure Shetland News can: -

  • Bring you the headlines as they happen;
  • Stay editorially independent;
  • Give a voice to the community;
  • Grow site traffic further;
