News / Sandwick school consultation
STATUTORY consultation on plans to discontinue S3 and S4 education at Sandwick Junior High School as of August 2015 will begin next week.
Shetland Islands Council said the consultation would run from 13 February until 28 March.
In November last year, following an almost seven hour long debate councillors agreed to retain S1 and S2 education in all junior high schools and to teach pupils from S3 up in the high schools in Lerwick and Brae.
The move has been opposed by rural communities throughout Shetland who feel the decision will undermine their future wellbeing.
The full proposal papers for Sandwick junior high will be made available online at www.shetland.gov.uk/education/schools_reconfiguration_project.asp next Thursday.
Printed copies will also be available from Hayfield House, at the Shetland Library, Sandwick Junior High School and the Anderson High School.
The council’s schools service said that two public meetings are being organized, on 4 March at the Sandwick school and at the Anderson high a day later.
Chair of the education committee, councillor Vaila Wishart said: “This is the first consultation following on from decisions the SIC took last November.
“Our staff have been working hard to set out the detail of this proposal, and we hope that anybody with an interest in Sandwick Junior High School will take this opportunity to make their views known.”
