News / New Anderson High still on schedule…just

The latest design for the new Anderson High School, which can be seen at Islesburgh community centre until 8pm on Tuesday,

PLANS for a new £42 million Anderson High School to be built next to Lerwick’s Clickimin Leisure Complex should be submitted next month.

The council is holding an open day at Islesburgh Community Centre until 8pm on Tuesday to show people the latest draft plans for the building.

Shetland Islands Council’s children’s services director Helen Budge urged people to come along, saying it was not too late for the plans to be altered to take into account concerns and comments.

The draft plans show the inside and outside of the new 1,180 pupil school and 100 bed halls of residence, as well as the layout of the roads, car park and bus drop off points.

SIC members and Lerwick community council were able to view the plans on Monday.

Budge said that most of the comments so far had been about the layout of the roads, with some concerns raised about whether the site could accommodate a two way flow of traffic.

Education staff are currently working on the environmental impact statement as part of the submission, which they expect to be presented in early March.

Should it be approved, construction workers should be able to go on site to start preparing the grounds ahead of the final design of the building being agreed.

Budge said that if everything goes according to plan, they hope to submit final plans to councillors for a decision to proceed in the late summer.

“At the moment we are still on schedule…just. But this has been an awfully long time coming so I can fully appreciate that there are folk who remain dubious that we can achieve this in the timescale,” she said.

“What I am hoping is that a lot of folk come along and have a look at the images we have of the new school and give us their comments and views.

“This is still a draft and we are at a stage where new things can be taken on board, so it’s important that we get as much feedback as possible.”
