Letters / An explanation please

Sustainable Shetland says it does not have “any fundamental objection” to linking Shetland to the National Grid with an inter-connector cable and only opposes a cable to the mainland now because “it is an integral part of the Viking Energy scheme”.

As it has no fundamental objection to a cable I would like to ask the organisation to explain clearly in what circumstances it would support linking Shetland to the National Grid with a cable to the mainland.

The group’s policy implies support for a cable if it wasn’t coupled to Viking Energy. But if we did somehow have a cable to the National Grid, without Viking Energy, that would allow other renewable energy developers to move into the islands so I don’t really see the logic of Sustainable Shetland’s policy. Hopefully it will offer an explanation.
