News / Northern lights alert

SKY WATCHERS in Shetland will have their cameras ready tonight (Thursday) after the British Geological Survey issued an aurora alert.

The survey said that following a fast coronal mass ejection (CME) leaving the sun on Tuesday (7 January) a geomagnetic storm is expected to arrive on earth increasing the chance of viewing the northern lights over the next few nights.

According to the Norwegian weather forecast, which now features on the Shetland News website, Thursday night will be clear with light winds and temperatures of between four and five degrees.
