A GROUP of local volunteers who plan to travel to Africa this summer to help in schools, orphanages and hospitals said they were amazed by the generosity of the Shetland public.

Team Malawi have just reached the £10,000 mark in their fundraising efforts.

Spokesman for the group Mark Wylie said at the weekend that a four-hour nonstop dancethon held by popular group Inferno last month had raised £1,200 alone, while a Christmas disco raised a similar amount.

“Team Malawi volunteers would like to thank everyone who sponsored the young dancers as well as Inferno themselves and the fantastic staff of Baroc who worked for nothing at the disco,” he said.

The seven volunteers who will travel to Malawi later this year are Tracy Webb, Nicola Duthie, Mark Wylie, Jenny Teale, John Thomson, Jenny Wylie and Magnus Johnston.
