Thieves ruin festivities for Burra garage

POLICE are hunting for thieves who broke into a Shetland garage business stealing a large sum of money and a car overnight on Saturday.

The thieves tried windows and doors before breaking into Burra Motors, at Easterdale, Hamnavoe, after 10.30pm on Saturday night.

Once inside they ransacked the office and used a crowbar to break into the garage safe, taking off with a substantial amount of cash and cheques.

Several cars were broken into before the thieves drove off in a red Vauxhall Zafira, which was found abandoned on the Staney Hill track above Hoofields, Lerwick on Sunday morning.

A police spokesman said the owner was “devastated” that his customers’ vehicles had been tampered with.

The loss of such a substantial amount of money will make the start of 2014 very difficult for the business and its staff, he added.

Anyone with any information or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area is asked to contact the police on 101 as soon as possible.
